The European Payment Services Directive (PSD2) requires payment users to be securely authenticated in order to enhance protection of individuals and reduce the amount of fraud occurring. These requirements are spelt out in the PSD2 Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) issued by the European Banking Authority and require compliance with this new law by the 14th September 2019.

Accepting card payments on board trains, planes and ferries is tricky, because online authorisation of cards can be difficult or impossible with patchy or non-existent communications. To make matters worse, the major card schemes now mandate online authorisation for more types of card transaction. Many card processing systems don’t support offline authorisation at all.

APMs differ from traditional card based transactions in a number of ways: form factor, technology used, associated/verification methodology and transaction flow.
